TheBusinessEndOfTheWC

Here we are at the quarter final stage of the World Cup; we have 2 days of uninterrupted sleep before the matches are back on at 10pm and 2:30am.

Huge; huge games are coming up with my perenial favourites Argentina versus the unexpectedly brilliant Germans; The pride of Africa-Ghana take on Uruguay, the impressive Brazilians take on the "still-not-up-to-their-best" Netherlands and Euro 08 Champions Spain against "How-the-f-did-we-get-here" Paraguay.

I'm actually surprised that my team Argentina have reached this stage, Maradona has almost zero coaching experience and is somehow relying on his character and charisma to will the team through.
Still after the debacle of the last World Cup where they failed to qualify from the group stages; this is a real bonus !

This is what The Sun of UK said about Argentina:
"Argentina have been the most entertaining team of the tournament so far. Their swashbuckling style of play has only been matched by Chile, but Chile don't have Maradona the circus master and Messi the acrobat; nor do they have Jonas Gutierrez as the clown played out of position.
Ignore prejudices, the Hand of God and all that nonsense: if Argentina win this World Cup, Maradona's redemption will be one of the great football stories of all time."

Poor England, Italy and France...all deserving the flak they are receiving from home.

Despite what some people said, I think this WC HAS been exciting especially with the shock results and the even more shocking performances of the 3 countries that I mentioned.

So for now, enjoy sleeping through the hors of 2:30-4;30am till Friday !

Psalm88

Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;
For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.
I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength:
Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.
Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.
Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.
Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.
Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee.
Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.
Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?
Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
But unto thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.
LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?
I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off.
They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together.
Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

ItIsUponUs

Yes...that's right; the Football World Cup is upon us.
Millions of red-eyed bleary workers will be reporting for work tomorrow with productivity significantly down for a whole month.
More than a billion Ringgit will change hands and that is just here in BolehLand.

The first world cup I truly remembered was in 78 where the likes of Pasarella, Ardiles and Kempes destroyed everything in their path to win it. Since then I have always been supporting Argentina for every world cup.
I like the fiery passion that they play with and they treat every game as if their lives depended on it.
However at the last world cup Argentina was booted out in the first round.

"Maradona the player; can he be Maradona the manager to get his grubby mitts on the WC?"

This world cup, Maradona has tinkered with the team until they looked almost unrecognisable.
He dropped Riquelme; to me the best playmaker in the world for ex-Man U's aging Veron.
Maradona and team also lost a qualifying match 6-0...unheard of for Argentina!!
However with the likes of Messi, Tevez, Higuain and Milito; they SHOULD qualify the group stages.

BTW my second favourite has always been Italy.
I think Holland and the Germany might also do well this world cup.

Anyway, I think that this is the most open world cup ever with no clear cut favourites.

WIth predictions abound, financial institutions are also using mathematics and their own analysis to predict who will win.
JP Morgan has predicted England with Spain as runner-ups.
UBS Wealth Management Research has predicted Brazil while Goldman Sachs has said Brazil has a 13.76% chance of winning .(Source: The New Paper Spore)
Even some witchdoctors in Africa have got in on the act and predicted an African team will win it !!

So who do you support and who do you think will win ?
Bets are being laid so bring it on !!!

13/17

The Manchester United Supporters club in Malaysia has been holding their annual dinner for 17 years now and I have been emceeing (pro bono) it for 13 years straight !
This year as usual it was held at Concorde KL.

Throughout the 13years I have seen the supporters club evolve into what it is today.

The Honorary Secretary is Lawrence How who with his team of volunteers and workers work endlessly and tirelessly to ensure the Club is always running.

I have met many fellow Man U fans there who never cease to amaze me on their love for Man U.
I am nothing compared to some of these die-hards.

For the last 3 years, the club has a royal patron in the form of HRH The Raja Muda of Perlis.
"Spot the Royal Patron...er..then me "!

The clubhouse has had its share of problems where it got burnt, fought with the corporate boys who wanted to recognise the short-lived Man U Cafe owners and having Old Trafford impose all kinds of silly conditions.

Still, the supporters club prevailed and despite all its setbacks, it has the support of a chosen few who ensure it is kept alive.
This despite many detractors and wanna-be's.
I can safely say that the commitment WITHOUT any agenda other than to support Man Utd is with Lawrence How and his group.
"Anderson Tan, Zetty 'I-dont-care-I'm-wearing-my-Arsenal-jersey" Juyanty and me !...Very brave she was..hahaha!..Even RM Perlis said so."

I enjoy emceeing this event, it is hardly scripted and things change all the time and by the graciousness of HRH The Raja Muda of Perlis, protocol is kept to a bare minimum.

Any queries on how to join the club?
